Muscle/Movement Impairments

  1. Asthenia
Generalized weakness, secondary to cerebellar dysfunction
  2. Ataxia
    Inability to perform coordinated movements
  3. Athetosis
    • Involuntary sustained postures
    • Peripheral movements without central stability
  4. Chorea
    Sudden, random, involuntary movement
  5. Clasp knife response
Hypertonicity and resistance in initiation of range that decreases throughout range
  6. Clonus
    • UMN lesion
    • Involuntary alternating spasmodic contraction of a muscle due to a quick stretch
  7. Cogwheel rigidity
    • Resistance to movement that has a phasic quality
    • Ex: PD
  8. Dysmetria
Can’t control the range of a movement and the force of the muscular activity
  9. Dystonia
Related to athetosis but is demonstrates larger axial muscle involvement than appendicular muscles
  10. Fasciculations
Muscular twitch caused by random discharge of a LMN and its muscle fibers
  11. Hemiballism
Involuntary, violent movement of a large body part
  12. Lead pipe rigidity
    • Uniform, constant resistance to ROM
    • Associated with basal ganglia lesion
  13. Rigidity
Severe Hypertonicity where a sustained muscle contraction does not allow any movement of a specified jt
  14. Tremor
Involuntary, rhythmic, oscillary movement secondary to basal ganglia lesion
