  1. Identify the parts of the compound microscope
Power switch, Base, fine adjustment, coarse adjustment, light control, arm, head, ocular lenses, rotating nose piece, objective lenses, stage, mechanical stage, iris diaphragm lever, condenser, substage light
  2. Base
    supports the microscope
  3. substage light (mirror)
located in the base, light passes directly upward through the microscope
  4. stage, mechanical stage
platform the slide rests on while being viewed- mechanical stage and/ or stage clips hold the slide in place
  5. condenser
small substage lens that concentrates light on the specimen- may have a rack & pinion knob that raises and lowers the condenser to vary light delivery.
  6. iris diaphragm lever
arm attached to the base of the condenser that regulates the amount of light passing through the condenser, permits the best possible contrast for viewing
  7. coarse adjustment knob
used to focus on the specimen
  8. fine adjustment knob
used for precise focusing once the coarse focus is accomplished
  9. head
supports the objective lense system (mounted on the nosepiece) and ocular lenses
  10. arm
vertical portion of the microscope that connects the base and head
  11. ocular
1 or 2 lenses at the superior end of th head. 10X magnification also has a pointerin one ocular lens
  12. nosepiece
rotating mechanism at the base of the head, carries 3 or 4 objective lensesover te light beam passing through the hole in the stage
  13. objective lenses
scanning, 4 X or 5X used for scanning the slide it is the shortest lense; low power, typically 10X, high power, ranges from 40X to 50X
  14. real image
    image projected to the ocular
  15. virtual image
the real image that is magnified by the ocular lens
  16. total magnification
magnification of any specimen being viewed is equal to the power of the ocular lens multiplied by the power of the objective lens used.

ex: ocular lens 10X and objective lens 45X total magnification is 450X (10 x 45)
  17. resolution
ability to discriminate two close objects as seperate
  18. resolving power
determined byt he amount and physical properties of the visible light that enters the microscope
  19. working distance
the distance from the objective lens to the specimen
  20. field
the area you see through the microscope
  21. care of the compound microscope
    • *hold upright with one hand on the arm and one on the base
    • *grit-free lens paper to clean, in a circular motion
    • *begin focusing on the lowest power objective lens
    • *use coarse adjustment knob only with the lowest power lens
    • *remove slide, rotate to lowest power lens, wrap cord, replace dust cover for storage
    • *never remove any parts from the microscope
  22. reverse images
images viewed on the microscope are reversed, the top of the specimen becomes the bottom and right becomes left
  23. adjustment of fine focus
fine focus will reveal depth of focus (layers top, middle, bottom)
