What are the four main muscles of mastications?
Temporalis
Mentalis
Medial pterygoid
Lateral pterygoid
What is the prime mover in the group of muscles of mastication?
The masseter is the strongest muscle of mastication.
How are muscles grouped into mastication?
The muscles originate from bony sites of cranium to insert at different sites of the mandible.
They all cross the TMJ
When they contract, they pull on the mandible towards origin of the particular muscle.
What are the main muscles of facial expressions? And what makes them in this group?
Most have origins from bone and insert in soft tissue- originate on the surface of the skull.
Orbicularis Oris- closes and purses lip
Buccinator- pulls mouth laterally
Levator Labii Superious- elevates upper lip
Orbicularis oculi- closses eyelid
Depressor anguli oris- pulls lower lip down
Mentalis- raises chin and protrudes lip
