Functions of muscles
- Produce movement:
- Maintain Posture:
- Protect and stabilise: covers and protects vital organs, helps hold bones in position
- Generate heat:approx. 85% of body heat is generated my muscular contraction
-
Muscle Types
- Skeletal: voluntary- attached to bone usually (sometimes cartilage), striated
- Cardiac: involuntary- only found in heard- highly specialised muscle
- Smooth: involuntary muscle, found in internal organs- low key contractions, smooth operator.
-
Sarcolemma
Muscle membrane- multi-nuclei
-
T-Tubules
Carry electrical currents from nerve cells to cause contraction,
-
-
Myofibrils
- Thick filaments (myosin heads)
- Thin filaments (actin)
- *Thin filament slides over thick filament when contracting.
-
Sarcoplasmic reticulum
similar to smooth ER- forms networks
