Muscular system

  1. Functions of muscles
    • Produce movement:
    • Maintain Posture:
    • Protect and stabilise: covers and protects vital organs, helps hold bones in position
    • Generate heat:approx. 85% of body heat is generated my muscular contraction
  2. Muscle Types
    • Skeletal: voluntary- attached to bone usually (sometimes cartilage), striated
    • Cardiac: involuntary- only found in heard- highly specialised muscle
    • Smooth: involuntary muscle, found in internal organs- low key contractions, smooth operator.
  3. Sarcolemma
    Muscle membrane- multi-nuclei
  4. T-Tubules
Carry electrical currents from nerve cells to cause contraction,
  5. Sarcoplasm
    Cytoplasm
  6. Myofibrils
    • Thick filaments (myosin heads)
    • Thin filaments (actin)
    • *Thin filament slides over thick filament when contracting.
  7. Sarcoplasmic reticulum
similar to smooth ER- forms networks
