Articulations

  1. What is an articulation?
    • The site where two or more bones meet.
    • Is the weakest aspect of the skeleton, because there are different types of bones.
  2. Function of articulations
Gives the skeleton mobility and hold the skeleton together
  3. 3 fibrous joints
    • Immovable
    • Sutures- found in the skull- connects different aspects of bone together (e.g. 4 aspects of cranium). Sutures are zig-zag like to increase surface area and helps them to interlock and eventually fuse together as we get older.
    • Syndemoses- Immovable, very fibrous tissue ligament
    • Gomphases - tooth socket- tooth will fuse to alveolar bone.
  4. Cartilaginous joints
Slightly movable- held together by cartilage and there is no joint capsule (chondroblasts produce cartilage)
  5. Synovial joint
    • Freely movable joint- ball and socket joints. Bones are separated by fluid filled cavities and are stabilised by ligaments and tendons.
    • The inside lining of the joint capsule is a synovial membrane
