Science - Metabolism, Enzymes and Homeostasis

  1. What is metabolism?
This is all the chemical reactions that take place in the cells of organisms
  2. What are enzymes?
They are biological catalysts.  This means that they speed up the chemical reactions in cells but does not get used up in the reaction
  3. What is the substrate?
This is the substance the enzyme acts on
  4. What is the product?
This is what the enzyme changes the substance into
  5. State an example of an enzyme and the substrate it acts on and its product
Maltose is an example of an enzyme

It acts on the substrate maltose and breaks down into the product glucose (sugar)
  6. Explain homeostasis
This is making sure that our body stays at the same condition even through the conditions outside the body may change
  7. State an example of homeostasis
Sweating and shivering are examples of how the body maintains homeostasis
