What is an ion?
An atom that has lost or gained electrons
What happens to the electrons in an Ionic bond?
They are TRANSFERRED (lost or gained)
What elements does an ionic bond happen between?
Metals and Non-metals e.g MgO
What type of atoms lose electrons during ionic bonding?
Metals
What type of atoms gain electrons during ionic bonding?
Non-metals
What happens to a magnesium atom during ionic bonding if it has the electronic configuration 2.8.2?
It loses 2 electrons to become a 2+ ion
What happens to an oxygen atom during ionic bonding if it has the electronic configuration 2.6?
It gains 2 electrons to become a 2- ion
What is a cation?
A positive ion
What is an anion?
A negative ion
What is an ionic bond?
An electrostatic force of attraction between oppositely charged ions
What type of melting and boiling points do ionic substances have?
HIGH
(very strong bonds which require a lot of energy to break)
Tip: always go for the highest option!
When can ionic substances conduct electricity and why?
When molten or dissolved because the IONS are free to move
When can ionic substances not conduct electricity and why?
When solid because the ions are not free to move
How do you prepare a pure, dry insoluble salt and what is the name of the reaction?
Mix the solutions
Filter the precipitate
Wash with distilled water
Place in an oven to dry
This is a Precipitation Reaction
Why is Barium Sulfate safe, despite being toxic?
It is insoluble, so does not dissolve in the bloodstream
How do you carry out a flame test?
Place the wire loop in HCl acid to clean
Dip the wire loop in the substance
Place the wire loop
IN
the flame
What colour are the following metal ions in a flame?
Sodium
Potassium
Copper
Calcium
Sodium - yellow/orange
Potassium - lilac
Copper - blue-green
Calcium brick-red
How do you test for carbonate ions - CO
3
2-
?
React with dilute acid to form CO
2
Bubble through limewater
Limewater goes cloudy
How do you test for Sulphate ions, SO
4
2-
?
Add dilute HCl acid
Then barium chloride solution
Observe a white precipitate
How do you test for Chloride ions, Cl
-
?
Add dilute nitric acid
Then silver nitrate solution
Observe a white precipitate
