Orofacial pain

  1. What are the main difference between chronic and acute pain?
    • Chronic pain is not a symptom of another disease, it's a disease itself. Chronic has the potential to become a memorized event where the pain continues when the causative lesion is solved.
    • Acute pain is usually a symptom of a problem (infection or injury)
  2. What are the 4 categories of common facial pain conditions?
    • Somatic (inflammatory nociceptive) pain
    • Neuropathic pain
    • Musculoskeletal pain
    • Headache (neurovascular)
  3. The main difference between somatic pain and neuropathic pain?
    • Somatic pain is "good pain" it is caused by inflammation that sensitizes nociceptors, site of injury is present and source.
    • Neuropathic pain "bad pain" with no benefit to host , no sign of injury and no source. Tx reduces neuronal excitability.
