Heat Stress Reference
OPNAVINST 5100.19 Chapter B-2
When to conduct heat stress survey
@PHEL I-III & Watch <= 4 hrs
: Space DB Temp > 100F
@PHEL I-III & Watch > 4 hrs
: Space DB Temp > 90F
@PHEL IV-VI
: Space DB Temp 85F or higher
Before ECC Drills if > 3 hrs
If a heat injury occurs
if CO requests
If required for follow-on survey
When is follow-on heat survey required?
Where WB & DB Temperatures are NOT recorded each hour
: At the end of each watch or work period until heat stress condition abates
Where WB/DB Temps are recorded each hour
: Only when DB increases by 5F and/or WB increases by 3F
Time Weighted Mean
Allows watchstander to spend a longer total amount of time at watchstation provided there are breaks to enter an air conditioned space or booth
DFM vs JP-5 Difference
DFM is paraffin-based (lubricant)
JP-5 is kerosene-based
LCS 2 Lube Oil
Mobil DEL-VAC 1640
LCS Diesel Engine Oil Sampling Frequency
1. Operating Engines (consult PMS card)
a. Daily
: Viscosity or Fuel Dilution/Thickening
b. Weekly or when oil is in warning/unacceptable condition
: Viscosity comparison (Kittiwake)
2. New Oil (prior to onload)
a. Clear & Bright
b. Viscosity by Kittiwake OTC
Typical Viscosity in Lube Oil
Would consult table in 262
9000 Series Oil (Diesel)
Test for viscosity/fuel dilution
What is an FSS Sample and when is it required?
Fuel Separator Sump Sample
Visual (C&B) TestÂ
5 mins after operation
every hour
EEBD
Good for 15 years
10 secs to put on
10 mins to egress
Pass/Fail for 9000 series oil viscosity
Anything above 2 is Marginal/Warning/Unacceptable
F-76 CCFD Passing Criteria
2.64 mg/L
40 ppm
How to BS & W
L/O
: Put 50mL lube oil + 50mL solvent in centrifuge tubes
Spin for 31 mins
F/O
: Put 100mL into centrifuge tubes
Spin for 16 mins
What do if L/O is cloudy?
Sit for 30 mins
Heat water to water bath to 120F
Transparency test
Explain visible sediment test
Sit sample upright for 10 mins
Sit sample sideways 10 mins
Observe for sediment > 1/8" OR
Observe for solid unbroken line
What samples are taken off FOCM and when?
5 mins after start/Every 8 hours
FWD/CFD
When do we test filter/separator towers (F-76) and what tests?
5 mins after initialize transfer
CFD/FWD/C&B
When do we WIP Storage/SVC tanks?
Weekly
Every 7 days when not in use
WIP Test Pass/Fail Criteria
Storage
: Above 3" strip down to 1" or until C&B passes from discharge of stripping/xfer pump
Service
: Above 1" strip down to below 1" & SAT BS&W or C&B
Lube Oil Sample: Sumps larger than 1 gallon
Must be tested daily
Also 24 hrs prior to start
Prior to onload
24hrs after strikedown
operating in unusual conditions/after casualties
BS & W Standards
Sat
: Sediment < .1% & Combined < .2%
Warning
: Sediment <.1% & Combined .2 to less than .4%
UNSAT
: Above .1% sediment or .4% combined
Sample fails BS & W
Online
: Stay online for 7 days, notify CO and troubleshoot
offline
: Need CO permission to start
