  1. Amine
A compound that has one or more organic groups bonded to nitrogen: primary, RNH2; secoundary, R2NH; or tertiary, R3N.
  2. Quaternary Ammonium Ion
A positive ion with four organic groups bonded to the nitrogen atom.
  3. Amino group
    The -NH2 functional group.
  4. Lewis base
A compound containing an unshared pair of electrons (an amine, for example).
  5. Heterocycle
A ring that contains nitrogen or some other atom in addition to carbon.
  6. Pyrrolidine
    In nicotine and other alkaloids

Pentagon with a Nitrogen (has an alone pair) along with a bond to H.
  7. Ammonium Ion
A positive ion formed by addition of hydrogen to ammonia or an amine (may be primary, secoundary, or tertiary).
  8. Ammonium Salt
An ionic compound composed of an ammonium cation and an anion; an amine salt.
  9. Quaternary ammonium salt
An ionic compound composed of a quaternary ammonium ion and an anion.
  10. Alkaloid
A naturally occuring, nitrogen-containing compound isolated from a plant; usually basic, bitter, and poisonous.
  11. Imidazole
    • In histamine
    • (a pentagon with 2 Nitrogen (1 carbon in between them) also both with an alone pair, and 1 Nitrogen bonded to H. Also has 2 double bonds.
  12. Purine
    • A nitrogen ring system in DNA; present in anticancer drugs.
    • An Imidazole attached to a benzene ring (although 2 carbons are replaced with N and again, each have an alone pair.
  13. Indole
    • In many alkaloids and drugs.
    • A benzene ring attached to a pentagon that has double bond, and a C replaced by a N, again with an alone pair.
  14. Piperidine
    • In many drugs.
    • A cyclohexane ring with a C replaced with a N that has an alone pair and attaches to a H.
  15. Pyridine
    • In several B vitamins.
    • A benzene ring with a C replaced by a N ( alone pair).
  16. Pyrimidine
    • A nitrogen ring present in some B vitamins.
    • A benzene ring with 2 carbons replaced with N.
  17. Quinoline
    • In antibacterial agents.
    • A benzene ring attached to another benzene ring that has a N replacing a C and takes 1 double bond away from 1 of the benzene rings.
