Pt look up & away
PT touches cornea w/tissue
Both eyes should blink
Facial nn
Test for jaw jerk reflex - describe; normal & pathological response; which nn is tested?
Thumb on chin w/hammer on thumb
Normal - Nothing should happen
Pathology - Jerk of chin
Facial nn
Test for mms of mastication
Ask pt to open & close mouth as PT palpates - temporalis & masseter
Test for facial sensation - describe; normal response; which nn is tested?
Cotton ball - light touch
Sharp item - pin prick
Hot/cold - T of forehead, cheek, chin
Facial nn
Functions of CN V - 4

Mms of mastication
Jaw jerk reflex
Corneal reflex
Facial nn
Bell's palsy - nn involved; S/S ( );
No pain, just paralysis
Bell's palsy & recovery
Full recovery within weeks-months
Bell's palsy & mms of face
IPSI both upper & lower mms are weak
Eyes don't close; drooping corner of mouth --> salivation
Bell's palsy & pain
No pain, just paralysis
Facial nn - common site of damage; leads to what pathology?
Stylomastoid foramen (between styloid & mastoid process) as nn exits skull
Pathology - Bell's palsy
What tract is involved in pathology of central CN VII
Corticobulbar
Pathology of CV VII - describe each
Central - Droop of lower CONTRA face
Peripheral - Droop of entire IPSI face
Test for mms of facial expression & mm involved - 7
Frown
- Cirrugator supercilli
Wrinkle nose
- Procerus; Nasalis
Squeeze eyes shut
- Orbicularis oculi
Purse lips
- Orbicularis oris
Wrinkle forehead
- Frontalis
Blowfish kiss
- Buccinator

Function of facial nn
Mms of facial expression
Taste to anterior 2/3 of tongue
Tearing
Diseases w/peripheral vestibulopathy - 6
BPPV

Labyranthitis
Menier's disease
Ototoxicity
Acoustic neuroma
Diseases w/central vestibulopathy - 4
MS
Stoke
TBI
Tumor
Peripheral vestibulopathy - Nystagmus
Unidirectional
Rotary AND linear
Suppresses w/fixation
Matches w/vertigo
Central vestibulopathy - Nystagmus
Direction changing
Rotary OR linear
Unable to suppress w/fixation
Can be separate from vertigo
Peripheral vestibulopathy - lesion location
Lesion of nn itself or supporting structures
Central vestibulopathy - lesion location
Pons (brainstem)
Cerebellum
Parietal cortex
Test for BPPV & tx
Hallpike-Dix Maneuver
Vestibular pathology of CN VIII - 2
Benign Paroxismal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
Nystagmus/vertigo/loss of focus
Difference between VOR 1 & VOR 2
PT places finger in front of pt's face
VOR 1 - pt moves head from side to side
VOR 2 - (+) finger movement in opposite direction of head movement
Tests for vestibular of CN VIII - 3
VOR 1
VOR 2
Hallpike-Dix Maneuver
Weber test - tests what? describe; normal result; sensorineural vs. conduction hearing loss - where is sound louder do reach?
Test for auditory acuity (neural component) of Vestibulochoclear nn (CN VIII)
Place vibrating fork to center of forehead
Normal - Sound heard = on both sides
Sensorineural hearing loss - sound louder in normal ear (sound localizes to opposite ear w/intact nn)
Conduction hearing loss - sound louder in deceased ear
Rhinne test - Normal result; (+) vs (-); sensorineural vs. conduction hearing loss
Normal - Air conduction (fork at external auditory meatus = outside of ear) is better (heard twice as long) than bone conduction (mastoid)
(+) = sensorineural hearing loss (air conduction > bone (both air and bone conduction are DEC equally, but difference between them is unchanged)
(-) = conduction hearing loss (bone conduction > air)
Rhinne test - tests what? describe (4 steps); graded how?
Test for auditory acuity of Vestibulochoclear nn (CN VIII)
Tests air conduction vs. bone conduction
Vibrating tuning fork is placed against mastoid process
Pt indicates when sound no longer heard
Fork is moved to external auditory meatus (near ear)
Pt states whether sound is heard here
(+) or (-)
Function of CN VIII
Auditory acuity - sensorineural vs. conduction hearing loss
Vestibular

ANS - BP & HR
Function of CN XI
Accessory nn
Motor to trapezius & SCM
SCM - rotate head to L & R
Test for CN XI both mms
Trapezius - shrug shoulder
Pathology of CN XII - Central vs. Peripheral
Peripheral - Tongue deviates TOWARD side of lesion w/atrophy & fibrilations
Central - Tongue deviates AWAY from side of lesion w/o atrophy or fibrulations
Test for CN XII
Hypoglossal nn
