5th grade B-1 Sponges,Cnidarians, and Worms

  1. What is adaptation?
A characteristic that helps an organism survive or reproduce in its environment.
  2. Phylum
One of 35 major  groups into which biologists classify members of the animal kingdom.
  3. vertebrate
An animal that has a backbone of an animal.
  4. invertebrate
An animal that has no backbone.
  5. cnidarian
An invertebrate animal that uses stinging cells to capture food and defend itself.
  6. polyp
A cnidarian body plan characterized by a vase-like shape and usually adapted for a life attached to an underwater surface.
  7. medusa
A cnidarian body plan characterized by a bowl shape and adapted for free-swimming life.
  8. parasite
An organism that lives inside or on another organism that takes food from the organism in or on which it lives.
  9. host
An organism that provides food to a parasite that lives on or inside it.
  10. porifera
means having pores as an example of sponges with tiny pores that cover its surface.
  11. nematoda
segmented worms belong too the phylum Annelida.
  12. platyhelminthes
flatworms belong to the phylum Platyhelminthes.
  13. annelida
a phylum that segmented worms belong.
  14. Levels of Classification:
Animals are classified according to how they are related to other animals.  These relations are determined by an animals body structure, the way the animal develops, and its DNA.
  15. Four Animal Characteristics:
Radial Symmetry: circular equally spaced around a central point.

Bilateral symmetry: just one line that divides it into halves that are mirror images.
  16. Describe how a coral reef forms.
    • A coral reef is built by cnidarians. At the beginning of its life, coral polyp attaches to a solid surface.
    • After attaching to a solid surface, the coral polyp produces a hard stony skeleton around its soft body.
  17. Identify different types of symmetry:
    • Bilateral symmetry: just 1 line of symmetry
    • Radial symmetry: many lines of symmetry
    • No symmetry: such as sponges
  18. Explain the benefits of a closed circulatory system:
Closed circulatory system can move blood around an animals body much more quickly than an open system can. Segmented worms have a closed circulatory system.
  19. Characteristics of porifera:
means having pores such as sponges
  20. Characteristics of cnidaria:
invertebrates use stinging cells to capture food and defend themselves.
  21. Characteristics of nematoda:
    segmented worms
  22. Characteristics of platyhelminthes:
    • long flat body
    • long round body
    • long round body made up of linked segments
  23. Characteristics of annelida:
segmented worms that have a head and tail ends. They all have tissues, organs and body systems.
