A&P Lab Midterm: Integumentary Sytem

  1. What is the function of keratinocytes?
Produce keratin; a fibrous protein that gives the epidermis its durability and protective capabilities
  2. What is the function of melanocytes?
Produce melanin; a brown-to-black pigment, which provides a protective pigment umbrella over the nuclei of the cells in the deeper epidermis layers, thus shielding their genetic material  from damaging effects of UV radiation from the sun.
  3. What is the function of a tactile(Merkel) cell?
    Serve as touch receptors.

There is a bond between these cells and the sensory nerve endings  called tactile or Merkel discs located at the epidermis-dermis junction
  4. What is the function of dendritic(Langerhans) cells?
    • Play a role in immunity.
    • First line of defense against foreign substances
  5. Name the layers of the epidermis from deep to superficial.
    • Stratum Basale
    • Stratum Spinosum
    • Stratum Granulosum

    • Reticular layer
    • Papillary Layer
