  1. Somite
    Bilaterally paired blocks of mesoderm that form along the head-to-tail axis of the developing embryo

    • Subdivide into:
    • Sclerotomes
    • Myotomes
    • Dermatomes

    • Give rise to:
    • vertebrae of the vertebral column, rib cage, and part of the occipital bone; skeletal muscle, cartilage, tendons, and skin (of the back)
  2. Zygapophysial joints
    • facet joints
    • Z-joints
    • set of synovial, plane joints between the articular processes of two adjacent vertebrae
  3. Whiplash accident
    • Range of injuries to the neck caused by or related to a sudden distortion of the neck associated with extension
    • Commonly associated with MVA, usually when the vehicle has been hit in the rear
    • Affects Anterior longitudinal ligament of vertebrae
