5-9 Lubricants and Lubrication Systems

  1. DESCRIBE the functions of lubricants
    • To reduce friction caused by metal-to-metal contact
    • Essential to prevent wear in mechanical devices where surfaces rub together
  2. DESCRIBE the characteristics of synthetic lubricants,
    • Acids and other chemicals are the base
    • Some materials are incompatible and synthetic oils of different manufacturers.
    • Fine lubrication qualities over petroleum based oils, such as:
    • lower tendency to leave coking deposits
    • stronger chemical stability at higher temperatures.

    • Disadvatages
    • Very corrosive
    • Limited shelf life of approx. 6 months
  3. DEFINE viscosity
the property of a fluid that resists the force tending to cause the fluid to flow.
  4. DESCRIBE a basic aircraft lubrication system
