Scroll saw/ hegner saw
Used for cutting shapes too intricate to cut with a coping saw. Materials used (e.g.) acrylic, wood
-
Band facer
Used for smoothing rough edges on wood
-
Pillar drill
Used for drilling precise holes in a range of materials.
-
try square
Used to draw straight lines or to draw an accurate 90° right angle
-
Marking gauge
Used in metalworking or woodworking to mark out lines for purposes like accurate cutting.
-
Hot wire strip heater
- It is a machine with a strip of wire that heats materials like acrylic so that they become malleable without becoming warped or start to bubble.
-
hammer
Used for nailing in panel pins precisely.
-
Sand paper
Used, when rubbed hard against the material, to wear away rough surfaces.
-
liquid solvent cement
This welds thermoplastic sheets or pipes together by softening the surface of the material being bonded
-
PVA glue
Used to stiffly secure panels of wood together by gluing them
-
Soldering iron
Uses SOLDER (an alloy of tin and lead) and melts this onto a PCB to secure electrical components to it.
-
Wire strippers
These strips the plastic tubing off an electrical wire so that the joining of the component to the PCB is more efficient and easy.
-
Pliers
Used mainly for cutting wire
-
name the 2 types of plastic:
Thermosetting plastics and thermoplastics
-
THERMOPLASTICS
- Can be reshaped by heat
- Used for rulers, aerosol tops, wrappers etc
- Colourful
-
THERMOSETTING PLASTICS
- Can chip or crack when dropped
- Can't be reshaped
- Generally strong and heat resistant
-
Explain how plastic is made.
Oil, air, water and salt are combined and processed to create powders, resins and granules.
-
POLYESTER RESIN (T.S.P)
- Paperweights
- make GRP
- Boat hulls
-
EPOXY RESIN (T.S.P)
- Glues
- waterproof wood glues
-
ACRYLIC/ PERSPEX (T.P)
- Record deck lids
- Shop signs
- Baths
- Jewellery
-
RIGID POLYSTYRENE (T.P)
- Disposable cups
- cosmetic bottles
- tv cabinets
-
Explain how plastics like acrylic are shaped.
They are heated on the hot wire strip heater until they become soft, pliable and malleable and then they can be shaped in different ways into different shaped. They can be folded, bent using equipment like a former or a jig.
-
Ferrous
A metal that contains iron
-
Non-ferrous
A metal that doesn't contain iron
-
Mild steel. Properties and uses
- Tough
- Ferrous
- High tensile strength
- Can be hardened
- Rusts easily
- Used commonly in schools, car bodies, nuts and bolts
-
Copper. Properties and uses
- Ductile
- Non- ferrous
- Can be beaten into shape
- Conductor of electricity and heat
- Used for electrical wiring, pipes, kettles and bowls.
-
Broad leaved hardwood tree (deciduous)
properties of its wood
- harder than softwood
- Trees loose their leaves
- OAK, ELM, BEECH.
-
Needle covered soft wood tree (conifers)
