Pressure

  1. what is pressure?
    Pressure is a measure of how effective a force  is.
  2. write out the word equation to calculate pressure.
    PRESSURE = FORCE ÷ AREA
  3. how do you calculate the density of an object or a medium?
    DENSITY = MASS ÷ VOLUME
  4. Archimedes' principle states that an object in water will feel an ……… equal to the water it …………… .
    Upthrust, displaces
  5. how do you calculate the force of upthrust?
    FORCE = PRESSURE × AREA
  6. What causes buoyancy?
    the pressure of water pushing on an object increases with depth thus the water pressure on top of a fish, pushing it down, is less than the pressure below the fish, pushing it up.
  7. Why does a boat float?
    it floats because the force of the water pushing the boat up from underneath is higher and stronger than the force of the air pushing the boat down and therefore the boat will float. You can also calculate force = pressure X area which would give you the force of upthrust and if this upthrust is more than the weight of the boat, then it will float.
  8. Why does a helium balloon float?
    Because it is less dense than air and the balloon will feel an upthrust equal to the air it displaces.
