Chapter 8 - Evolutionary Perspectives on Personality

  1. natural selection
process by which adaptations are created and change takes place over time
  2. hostile forces of nature
    • included food shortages, diseases, parasites, predators, and extremes of weather
    • - focuses on the events that impede survival
  3. sexual selection
evolution of characteristics because of their mating benefits, rather than because of their survival benefits
  4. intrasexual competition
two stags locking horns in combat is the prototypical image of this
  5. intersexual selection
members of one sex choose a mate based on their preferences for particular qualities
  6. genes
are packets of DNA that are inherited by children from their parents in distinct chunks
  7. differential gene reproduction
defined by reproductive success relative to others
  8. inclusive fitness theory
modern evolutionary theory based on differential gene reproduction
  9. adaptive problem
anything that impedes survival or reproduction, or anything whose solution increases the odds of survival or reproduction
  10. xenophobia
    fear of strangers
  11. byproducts of adaptations
process also produces thing that are not adaptions
  12. evolutionary byproducts
incidental effects evolved changes that are not properly considered adaptations. For example, our noses hold up glasses, but that is not what the nose evolved for
  13. functionality
the notion that our psychological mechanisms are designed to accomplish particular adaptive goals
  14. deductive reasoning approach (top down)
theory-driven method of empirical research is one approach to scientific investigation
  15. inductive reasoning approach (bottom up)
    data-driven method of empirical research
  16. social anxiety
defined as distress or worry about being negatively evaluated in social situations
  17. evolutionary-predicted sex differences
hold that the sexes will differ in precisely those domains where women and men have faced different sorts of adaptive problems
  18. effective polygyny
a few males will sire multiple offspring, whereas some will have none at all
  19. sexually dimorphic
highly different in size and structure
  20. frequency-dependent selection
in some contexts, two or more heritable variants can evolve within a population
  21. restricted sexual strategy
    delayed intercourse and prolonged courtship
  22. unrestricted mating strategy
a man's level of commitment to her is irrelevant, so prolonged assessment of his prior commitments is not necessary
