# Module 9

What is mechanics? It is the study of motion, forces and energy. Why is physics a fundamental science? it lies at the root of all the other sciences. it is used in biology, meteorology, chemistry, etc. What is the most important concept in all of physics? All motion is relative. What is speed? It is the distance traveled divided by the time traveled. What is velocity? It is the speed of an object plus the direction it is moving. What is a vector quantity? Vector quantity is a physical measurement that contains directional information. What is a Scalar quantity? It is a physical measurement that does not contain directional information. Is speed scalar or vector? Speed is scalar. What is acceleration? It is the rate of change in velocity. What is the formula for acceleration? Acceleration= final velocity-initial velocity/ time. Is there such thing as deceleration is physics? No. What is free fall? It is the motion of an object when it is falling, under the influence of gravity. What is a reference point? A point against which position is measured. What is the formula for speed? Speed= Distance traveled/ time traveled What is the relative speed when two object travel in the same direction? It is the difference(-) between their individual speeds. Object 1 speed- Object 2 speed= relative speed What is the relative speed when two objects are moving the opposite direction? It is the sum of their individual speeds. Object 1 speed+ object 2 speed= relative speed What is air resistance? It is where the air molecules causes drag on an object...... Light objects are effected more than heavy objects. What is the acceleration due to gravity (during free fall)? It is for any object 9.8 meters per second squared. In English units it 32 feet per second squared. What is the formula for distance of a falling object? Distance= 1/2  x acceleration x time squared Velocity is? Speed in a given direction. The acceleration of an object is one of Newton's Laws, which one is it? Newton's second law of motion. Speed is? Direction traveled per unit of time. Newton's First Law of Motion states What is the rate of velocity called? Acceleration An object is in motion if it changes position relative to a? Reference Point A plane moving at 600m/sec is an example of? Velocity Distance traveled per unit of time is? Speed. Newton's third law uses scalar quantities? False. What unit do we use to measure force? Newtons. What is a quantity that has both size and direction. Vector. A formula for acceleration is? A=Vf-Vi/Tf-Ti Newton's Third Law uses scalar quantities? False Authorethanjenn ID314892 Card SetModule 9 DescriptionApologia Physical Science Module 9 Updated2016-04-25T23:01:36Z Show Answers
