    • The individual (metaphorically) holds up a mirror to imagine how others judge their appearance and behaviour

    Identity works on three levels

    • 1) Passive identities: have the potential to become important but largely life dominant e.g. class. However circumstances may change that make these more important to each individual
    • 2) Active identities: identities that individuals are conscious of and provide a basis for their actions
    • 3) Politicised identities: formed through campaigns highlighting the importance of a particular identity and organising collective action e.g. gender in the 1970s and ethnicity today
