Gas fires

  1. The four main types of gas fire are
    • Radiant,
    • ILFE,
    • DFE,
    • Flueless
  2. BS 5871 covers
The installation of the 4 main types of gas fire.
  3. BS 5871 part 1
    Radiant fires
  4. BS5871 part 2
    ILFE
  5. BS 5871 part 3
    DFE
  6. BS 5871 part 4
    Flueless fires.
  7. Requirements for closure plates.
    • Sealed on all four sides.
    • Plate should be sealed with closure tape conforming to a specification PRS10.
  8. What is the purpose of the air relief hole in a closure plate.
The air relief hole is to provide an alternative route for air to be pulled into the flue into the flue instead of over the burner should the pull from the flue become excessive, therefore minimising flame disturbance.
  9. Typical heat input of a radiant gas fire.
    Normally about 5.5kW.
  10. Minimum catchment space dimensions
  11. Minimum hearth dimensions radiant fire
    • 300mm
    • 50mm
    • 12mm
  12. What forms a catchment space for an ILFE fire
    A firebox
  13. Typical heat input of a ILFE
    Normally less than 7kW
  14. What is the minimum flue dimension for a ILFE fire
    125mm diameter.
  15. The minimum dimensions for the hearth of an ILFE fire installation
    • 300mm from builders opening.
    • 12mm thick rising to a lip of 50mm.
    • 150mm either side of the fire.
  16. Why does an ILFE fire require a hearth.
To prevent the risk of hot coals rolling off the fire onto the carpet.
  17. DFEs up to 20kW net input require how much purpose provided ventilation
100cm2, unless specified by the manufacturer.
  18. What is the minimum flue diameter for an DFE fire
    175mm
  19. What is the ventilation requirement for two DFE fires installed in the same room
    235cm2
  20. Typical heat input for a DFE fire
    Often around 12 to 14kW.
  21. Where should gas fires not be installed?
    • Rooms containing a bath or shower.
    • Rooms intended for sleeping unless the appliance is under 14kW and has a VSD fitted or is room-sealed.
  22. When is a flue guard required.
A terminal guard is usually required for flues that terminate less than 2m above an area to which there is public access.
