  1. A- and An-
    Without or no

    • Examples:
    • Atraumatic means without energy.
    • Anuria means absence of urine.
  2. Ab-
    Away from

    Example: Abduction means away from the midline.
  3. Ad-
    Towards

    Example: Adduction means towards the midline.
  4. Anti-
    Againist

    Example: Antiemetics work againist or prevent vomiting.
  5. Dys-
    Difficult, painful, or bad

    Example: Dsyphagia means difficulity eating or swallowing.
  6. Eu-
    Good, Easy, or Normal

    Example: Euthyroid meand having a normally functioning thyroid gland.
  7. Endo-
    Within or inside

    Example: Endocrine means to secrete internally.
  8. Ex- or Exo-
    Without, out of, outside, or away from

    Example: Exocrine means to secrete externally (via duct).
  9. Ecto-
    Outside

    Example: Ectoparasite is an organism that lives on the outer surface of the host.
  10. Hyper-
    Elevated, higher, or more than normal

    Example: Hyperglycemia means elevated amounts of blood glucose.
  11. Hypo-
    Depressed, lower, or less then normal

    Example: Hypoglycemia means depressed amounts of blood glucose.
  12. Inter-
    Between

    Example: Intercostal means between the ribs.
  13. Intra-
    Within

    Example: Intramuscular means within the muscle.
  14. Poly-
    Many or Excessive

    Example: Polyuria means excessive amount urination.
  15. Oligo-
    Scant or little

    Example: Oligouria means scant amount of frequency of urination.
  16. Pre-
    Before

    Example: Preanesthetic means before anesthesia.
  17. Post-
    After

    Example: Postanesthetic means pertaining to after anesthesia.
  18. Sub-
    Below, under, or less

    Example: Sublingual means under the tongue.
  19. Super- and Supra-
    Above, beyond, or excessive

    Examples:

    • Supernumerary means more than the regular number.
    • Suprasapular means above the shoulder blade.
  20. Epi-
    Upper
  21. Infra-
    Below or beneath
  22. Meta-
    Beyond
  23. Ultra-
    Above, increased, or more than normal
  24. Pan-
    All

    Around

    Example: Perioperative is pretaining to the period before, during and after an operation.
