Protection
Absorption
Support
Secure a Dressing
Pressure
Debridement
Discourage self mutilation
Packing
What are the four big considerations when applying a bandage?
Appropriate material
Smoothness
Tightness
Owner Instruction
Why is duct tape both good and bad?
Can keep moisture out (good)
Can trap moisture inside (bad)
What happens is a bandage is to tight?
causes a tourniquet effect

can be closed w/ stitches or staples
No infectin
When can sutures be removed?
7-10 days
What is second intention healing?
When wound edges can not close (open wound healing)
Can be open due to infection
In 2nd intention when does healing start? When does wound contraction start?
Healing
: 24 hrs
Contraction
: 72 hrs
When does 2nd intention healing stop?
When edges meet
What is 3rd intention healing
Delayed closure of primary skin layer to allow bottom layer to heal
3-6 days after cleaning and debridement but before granulation tissue forms
Why would we have 3rd intension healing?
