Effleurage
Fluid, deep stroking towards the heart that usually uses the entire surface of the hand. Effleurage primarily affects the skin, nerves, and superficial muscles. Vartations are used all over the body.
(Relates the the Water element)

Effleurage
-
What does Effleurage do?
- - Introduces touch to the body
- - Sensitizes the skin
- - Used to apply lubricant
- - aids venous return
- - Transition from one area to another, and one stroke to the next
- - Used to assist in passive stretch of muscles
-
Petrissage
A kneading movement in a circular pattern using the sides of the hands or the fingers, lifts muscles away from the bone. Primarily affects the superficial muscels. Used over almost all muscles, but especially useful on soft fleshy parts of the body.

Petrissage
-
Four benefits of petrissage
- * Pumps nutrients through the muscles
- * Milks muscles of wastes
- * Assists in venous return
- * May help free adhesion and scar tissue
-
Friction
A deeper circular pressure over specific areas using the thumbs, fingertips, sides or heel of the palm. Moves superficial tissue over deep. Affects deeper muscle tissue. Use as needed at muscle attachments, around joints, and especially taut bands of tissue or muscle.

Percussion/tapotment
Light well-cushioned blows primarily using fingertips and the sides of the hand. Innervates the skin and nerves. Mostly used on well padded areas. it has limited application, but mostly used on the back and the back of the legs. Tapotement strokes include Beating, Hacking, Slapping, Cupping, and Pinching.

nerve strokes
Light brushing with the fingertips affects the nerves. use all over the body. not a traditionsal swedish stroke

nerve strokes
-
Two benefits of nerve strokes
- * Wakes up the nerves
- * Transfers sensation from one part of the body to another
-
Vibration
Rhythmical, tembling movement used on any part of the body, generally following nerve pathways. May be light to course shaking. Through vibrations is not considered one of the classical swedish massage strokes, it is a useful stroke which may be performed alone or combined with effleurage during Swedish Sequence.
