Shoulder anatomy

  1. Deltoid m.
    • Proximal: lateral 1/3 part of clavicle, acromion, spine of scapula
    • Distal: Deltoid tuberosity of humerus
    • F: Abduct humerus, flexion and rotation of humerus, extension and lateral rotation of humerus
    • N.: axillary n.
  2. Supraspinatus m.
    • O: Supraspinatus fossa of scapula
    • I: Superior facet of greater tubercle of humerus
    • F: First 15o of abduction of humerus
    • N: suprascapular n
  3. Infraspinatus m.
    • O: Infraspinatus fossa of scapula
    • I: Middle facet of greater tubercle of humerus
    • F: Lateral rotation of humerus; helps hold humeral head in glenoid cavity
    • N: suprascapular n.
  4. Teres minor m.
    • O: Middle part of lateral border of scapula
    • I: Inferior facet of greater tubercle of humerus
    • F: Lateral rotation of humerus; helps hold humeral head in glenoid cavity
    • N: axillary n.
  5. Teres major m.
    • O: Dorsal surface of inferior angle of scapula
    • I: Medial lip of intertubercular groove of humerus
    • F: Extension, adduction and medial rotation of humerus (same as latissimus dorsi m.)
    • N: lower subscapular n.
  6. Rotator cuff muscles
    • SITS
    • Supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis (inserts to lesser tubercle)
    • SIT insert into greater tubercle
  7. Subscapularis m.
    • O: Subscapular fossa of scapula
    • I: Lesser tubercle of humerus
