Phlebotomy (Day 2)

• antiseptic: used on biotics
• disinfectant: used on surfaces/instruments

• PPT: Plasma preparation tube - contains EDTA
• PST: Plasma separator tube - contains heparin

• Lithium heparin
• least interference w/ tests

• 9:1
• 90% of max volume

• 5.25% sodium hypochlorite
• *NOTE - CDC/HICPAC says this is preferred for surfaces and instruments

• 15-17: special needle/bag - donor and therapeutic phlebo
• 18: hypodermic - transfer needle (rarely used)
• 20: multisample hypodermic - large-volume tubes or large-volume syringes (sometimes used)
• 21: multisample hypodermic - standard venipuncture needle (normal)
• 22: multisample hypodermic - older children/adults w/ small veins
• 23: butterfly - children/infants/diff veins and hand veins of adults

• povidone-iodone
• (alcohol in allergy cases)

lithium heparin (Na heparin would fuck up results) is used because there is no "wait time" for coagulation when using plasma

• sodium polyanethol sulfonate
• Used for cultures
• inhibits phagocytosis of bacteria
• reduces complement protein
• reduces certain antibiotic activity
