  1. Gait cycle
    is the time from the point at whcih the heel of one foot touches the ground to the time it touches the ground again
  2. Stance Phase
    is one of the two phases that occur during the gait cycle. It occurs when the foot is in contact with the floor and the extremity is bearing partial or total body weight.
  3. Heel Strike
    (foot strike)- occurs when the heel or foot first comes in contact with the floor.
  4. Foot flat
    as the term implies, occurs when th foot is flat on the floor.
  5. Midstance
    phase occurs when the foot is directly under the body's weight and the entire foot is in contact with the floor. Because the body weight is transferred entirely to the one supporting leg and the other leg is in the middle of its swing phase, this is also referred to as single-leg support.
  6. Heel-off
    occurs when the weight begins to transfer to the front of the foot, and the heel is lifted off the floor.
  7. Toe-off
    occurs when the foot comes off the floor and the swing phase begins. This is also refferred to as push off, since the extremity now propels the body forward and the leg continues into the second phase of gait.
  8. Swing phase
    The second phase of the gait cycle. Occurs when the foot is not in contact witht he floor and no weight is borne on the extremity. The swing phase begins with toe-off and is divided into early, mid, and late-swing phase.
  9. Early Swing
    (acceleration)- begins immediately after toe off. Momentum is increased in its non-weight bearing propulsion forward.
  10. Mid-swing
    (swing through)- The leg continues its swing through until just before heel strike wehn it goes through the late swing, or deceleration.
  11. Late swing
    (deceleration)- slows down foward propulsion, makes a smooth contact with the floor and begins a new gait cycle

  14. Double limb support
    During the first and last 10% of stance in walking, thte body is supported by both lower extremities. This occurs a the beginning of the stance pahse during heel strike for one leg and at the end of the stance phase, just before toe-off, for the other.
  15. Stride length
    is the distance from heel strike of one foot to heel strike of the same foot in one gait cycle.
  16. Step length
    is the distance from heel strike of one foot to heel strike of the other foot in one gait cycle.

  18. Stride width
    the body's side to side movement as weight is shifted from one lower extremity to the other. It is the distance between the midline of one foot at midstance and midline of the other foot at midstance.
