  1. Cumulative Sentence
    Sentence that completes the main idea at the beginning oth the sentence, and then adds on
  2. Hortative Sentence
    sentence that exorts, advises, calls to action
  3. Imperative sentence
    sentence used to command, enjoin, implore, or entreat
  4. Periodic Sentence
    presents its central meaning in a main clause at the end of the sentence; main clause is preceded by a phrase that cannot stand alone
  5. Inversion
    inverted order of words in a sentence (variation of the subject- verb order)
  6. Juxtaposition
    a device wherein the writer places a person, concept, place, or idea, etc parallel to another for the purpose of comparison, contrast, rhetorical effect, suspense, or character development
  7. Metaphor
    makes an implicit, implied, or hidden comparison between two things that are poles apart but have some similar characteristics
  8. Metonymy
    consists of the use of the name of one object or concept for that of another to which it is related, or a part of
  9. Oxymoron
    phrase with words that seem to contradict one another
  10. Parallelism
    recurrent syntactical similarity
  11. Personification
    attribution of a lifelike quality to an inanimate object or idea
  12. Rhetorical question
    for of a question used for effect, emphasis, or provocation; NOT answered by author
  13. Zeugma
    a figure of speech in which a word, usually a verb or adjective, applies to more than one noun, blending together grammatically and logically different ideas
