  1. What is virtualization?
Uncoupling computing processes from their underlying hardware. means to create a virtual version of a device or resource, such as a server, storage device, network or even an operating system
  2. What are the benefits of virtualization?
    • Improved Hardware Utilization
    • Improved Flexibilty
    • Improved Fault Tolerance
    • Improved Consistency
    • Reduced Downtime
    • Energy saving
    • Better for the Environment
    • Cost savingsCan virtualize to modernize older Servers or Application
  3. What are the limitations of virtualization?
    • Licensing Costs
    • Over-subscription
    • Increased Complexity
    • Not ideal for Specialized hardware
    • Not ideal for performance serversCautioned to virtualize Business critical systems
  4. What is a hypervisor?
a piece of computer software, firmware or hardware that creates and runs virtual machines
  5. What are the differences between a Type 1 and Type 2 hypervisor? What are the benefits of using one over the other?
    • Type 1 – bare metal – controls both the hardware and include the guest OS.
    • Production Server Virtualization
    • (ESX, XenServer, Hyper-V)
    • Type 2 – Hosted – Works like an application, installed inside another OS
    • Engineering Testing, development(VMware Workstations MS Virtual PC)
  6. Name three commonly used enterprise hypervisors and their developers.
    • VMWare: ESX, Workstation
    • Citrix: XenServer, Microsoft: Hyper-V, Virtual PC
  7. What is a virtual machine?
    • a tightly isolated software container that can run its own operating systems and applications as if it were a physical computer. A virtual machine behaves exactly like a physical computer and contains it own:
    • virtual CPU,
    • RAM hard disk
    • Network interface Card. An operating system can't tell the difference between a virtual machine and a physical machine, nor can applications or other computers on a network. Even the virtual machine “thinks” it is a physical computer. Nevertheless, a virtual machine is composed entirely of software and contains no hardware components whatsoever
  8. What is a host?
is the actual machine on which the virtualization takes place
  9. What is a guest?
    is the virtual machine
  10. What is a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)?
Consists of Virtual machines with Desktop OSes that can be accessed and customized by users
  11. Name two VDI products.
-Dell Wyse (thin and Zero Client)-VMWare’s Vmweiw Virtual desktop offering
  12. Where do the user’s desktop OS, user personalization, and settings reside?
    on the host
  13. What are terminal services?
A server OS application that presents a desktop session to a user
  14. What are two commonly used protocols for terminal services?
    ICA – CitrixRDP(Remote desktop) - Microsoft
  15. What are some benefits of using terminal services?
Users can access the same desktop environment remotely or in the office
  16. What is the key difference between VDI and Terminal Services?
VDI have thin client or zero clientTerminal services use desktops
  17. In a data center, what devices or services can be virtualized? What are the benefits?
    • Client, Server, Storage, networking
    •   -Improved Asset Utilization
    •   -Lower Capital and power cooling costs
    •   -Reduced management Touch points  -Accelerate IT Service Delivery
  18. What shouldn’t be virtualized?
    • -Systems requiring extreme performance-maybe more suited to dedicated hardware
    • -anything with a dongle/physical hardware attached
    • -Applications?OS with license/support agreements that don’t permit virtualizationAnything critical needs to be tested in environment
  19. The guest on an ESX host cannot see its storage. What are some of the basic steps that you would take to troubleshoot the problem?
Ping the Storage if it is iSCSI
  20. What things should you check on the host server?
Power on? Lights? Cables connected, Update drivers, firmware
  21. What things should you check on the SAN?
Ping the Storage if it is iSCSI
  22. What things should you check on the guest?
Rescan VMs just need to be found, Confirm Access rights and authentication
  23. What should you always do if you add a device, add storage, or change storage setting?
Rescan VMs just need to be found, Confirm Access rights and authentication
