  1. What are the phase changes called?
    • solid to liquid: fusion/crystallizations
    • liquid to gas: vaporization/condensation
    • solid to gas: sublimation/deposition
  2. What is the equation for the heats of phase change?

  3. When a substance absorbs or releases heat, it either:
    changes temperature or changes phase but not both at the same time
  4. How is the amount of heat absorbed or released related to temperature (equation):

  5. How is the phase diagram for water different?
    Negative slope: High pressure changes a solid to a liquid.
  6. What is the critical point?
    • The end of the liquid-gas boundary. Beyond this point the substance displays properties of both a liquid and a gas
    • A supercritical fluid, no amount of pressure can force the substance back into is liquid phase
  7. What is the triple point?
    The temperature and pressure at which all three phases exist simultaneously in equilibrium
