Magnesium Sulfate

Electrolyte

• Reduces striated muscle contractions and blocks peripheral neuromuscular transmissions by reducing acetylcholine release at the myoneural junction
• Manages seizures in toxemia of pregnancy
• Induces uterine relaxation
• Can cause bronchodilation after Beta-agonist and anticholinergic have been used.

• Eclamptic Seizure
• Torsades
• Hypomagnesaemia

• Heart Blocks
• Myocardial Damage
• Shock

• CNS depression
• Circulatory collapse
• Facial flushing
• Diaphoresis
• Hypotension
• Decreases reflexes

• Adult:
• Seizure activity associated with pregnancy: 1-4g IV/IO over 3 mins max dose 30-40g/day

Torsades/Cardiac arrest due to hypomagnesaemia:  1-2g in D5W IV/IO over 5-20mins

Asthma: 1-2g mixed in 50-100mL over 10-20mins

• Peds: IV/IO infusion 25-50mg/kg over 10-20mins(faster if treating Torsades)
• Asthma: 25-50mg/kg over 10-20mins
