The components of the periodontium include:
alveolar bone, root, and periodontal ligament

The alveolar bone/ ridge or process is
composed of:
a combination of bone, cartilage and cementum
alveolar bone proper
supporting alveolar bone
supporting alveolar bone and alveolar bone proper
supporting alveolar bone and alveolar bone proper

All bundles of principal fibers of the periodontal ligament are embedded at either end in some tooth tissue or some closely associated tissue. They may be embedded either with:
One end in cementum and the other in lamina dura (true alveolar bone), or one end in the
cementum and the other in cervical enamel
One end in cementum and the other in lamina dura; or one end in cementum and the other in trabecular bone
One end in the cementum and the other in trabecular bone; or one end in cementum and the other in cortical bone
One end in cementum and the other in lamina dura; or one end in cementum and the other also in cementum (of an adjacent tooth)
One end in cementum and the other in lamina dura; or one end in cementum and the other also in cementum (of an adjacent tooth)
-
Three types of transitional interfaces may be present at the CEJ
1. Cementum may _________ the enamel at the CEJ and be mistaken for _________ .
2. Cementum and enamel may ______ at the CEJ and pose ________ for the patient or clinician.
3. A gap may exist between cementum and enamel, exposing ________ and causing _________ root surfaces.
- overlap
- calculus
- meet end to end
- no problems
- dentin
- hypersensitive

Cells found in the periodontal ligament include:
Blood cells, endothelium, fibroblasts, cementoblasts, osteoblasts, osteoclasts and
odontoclasts only
Blood cells, endothelium, fibroblasts and epithelial rests of Malassez only
Cementoblasts, osteoblasts, osteoclasts and odontoclasts only

-
A cementicle is likely the result of microtrauma, and can be describes as:
A cementoblast that becomes entrapped in cementoid
An abnormal deposit of spherical cementum near the CEJ
A mineralized body of cementum found on the root or in the periodontal ligament
An excessive deposit of cementum at the root apex or apcies
A mineralized body of cementum found on the root or in the periodontal ligament

The functions performed by the periodontal ligament include:
Transmits occlusal forces
Protects surrounding soft tissue structures
Cementum, dentin, and bone apposition
Cementum and bone resorption
Provides nutrition for the periodontium

Unlike the soft connective tissue of the pulp, the nerve supply of the perioddontal ligament transmits pain, touch, pressure and temperture sensations.
True

-
Which of the following does NOT come from the Mesoderm embryonic layer?
alveolar bone

-
Bone cells which form bone are called ________ and cells which reside within bone matrix are called __________
-
The main prinicpal fiber group of the periodontal ligament is the alveolodental ligament which consists of five (5) fiber subgroups which include:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
- alveolar crest
- horizontal
- oblique
- apical
- interradicular
-
Compare and contrast Acellular and Cellular Cementum:
- Acellular cementum is the first cementum to be laid down and it does not have cementocytes. The width of the acellular cementum never changes. The Sharpey's fibers in acellular cementum are fully mineralized. The Sharpey's fibers in the cellular cementum are generally mineralized only partially at the the edge. The width of the cellular cementum can change over the life of the tooth. Cellular cementum is the last cementum to get laid down. It is laid down at quicker pace so the cementoblasts get stuck in it. The cementoblasts that
- don't get stuck migrate to the edge of the cellular cementum and wait until they need to make more cementum.
