  1. Give an example of sifting.
    Baker sifts flour to remove the large lumps in the flour
  2. How can magnetic attraction be used to separate a mixture?
    You stir a magnet through mixture and the magnet pulls out the magnetic material
  3. Give an example of the use of magnetic attraction. 
    A cow magnet is put into the cow’s first stomach which catches any metallic materials(such as barbed wire) and does not allow them to enter the second stomach or digestive system.
  4. How is evaporation used to separate a solution?
    A solution is heated or left uncovered until all liquid turns into gas leaving only the solid

    is chromatography?
    A process used to separate and analyze the solutes in a solution by placing a drop of solution on filter paper, then put the filter in a solvent. 
  6. How is floatation used to separate a mixture?
    When a solution is stirred and allowed to settle, the solids that float to the top are skimmed off the surface
  7. What is a solvent?
    The substance in a solution that is in the greatest amount
  8. What is a solute?
    The substance in a solution that is in the least amount
  9. In a solution, is there usually more solvent or solute?
    solvent
  10. When a solution is said to be “concentrated,” what does that mean?
    It has more solute.
  11. When a solution is said to be “diluted,” what does that mean?
    It has more solvent
  12. What can make a solution more concentrated?
    Add more solute

    Add more solvent
  14. What three things affect the rate at which a solute dissolves?
    • Temperature change
    • particle size

  15. How does an increase in temperature affect the rate of dissolving?
    Heat makes more solute dissolve faster
  16. How does particle size affect the rate of dissolving?
    Smaller particles dissolve faster
  17. How does stirring affect the rate of dissolving?
    More solute will dissolve faster
  18. What is a physical change?
    Change in size or shape that does not chemically change the matter
  19. What is a chemical change?
    • When substances chemically combine to make a new substance, with:
    • a change in color 
    • forms tarnish 
    • releases gases
  20. Give an example of a physical change.
    Sharpening a pencil
  21. Give and example of a Chemical change 
    baking a cake
