  1. Matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space.
  2. Atom
    The basic unit of matter.
  3. Element
A pure substance made of only one kind of atom.
  4. Molecule
A group of atoms chemically bonded together.
  5. Compound
A substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds.
  6. Substance
A single kind of matter that is pure and has a specific set of properties.
  7. Physical Property
A characteristic of a pure substance that can be observed without changing it into another substance.
  8. Chemical Property
A characteristic of a pure substance that describes its ability to change into different substances.
  9. Chemical Bond
An attractive force that holds together the atoms, ions, or groups of atoms in a molecule or compound.
  10. Mixture
A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined.
  11. Heterogeneous Mixtures
A mixture that is not uniform in composition; components are not evenly distributed throughout the mixture.
  12. Homogeneous Mixtures
A mixture in which the composition is uniform throughout.
  13. Solution
A mixture where you cannot see the separate parts of the mixture (ex: air, sugar water, salt water) and is all one phase.
  14. Solid
State/phase of matter that has definite shape and volume, and the particles are locked in place and can only vibrate.
  15. Liquid
    • State/phase of matter that has definite
    • volume, but no shape. The particles are close together, but can move
    • past each other (i.e. flow).
  16. Gas

    .
State/phase of matter that has no definite volume or shape. The particles can move freely and collide with each other
  17. Physical Change

    .
A change of matter from one form to another without a change in chemical properties
  18. Chemical Change
A change that occurs when one or more substances change into entirely new substances with different properties.
  19. Law of Conservation of Matter
Matter is not created nor destroyed in any chemical or physical change.
  20. Temperature
  21. A measure of the average energy of motion of the particles of a substance.
  22. Thermal Energy
The energy of motion in the molecules of a substance.
