-
Electricity
energy that results from charged particles.(Electrons + Protons)
-
Static Charge (Static Electricity)
Electric charger that tends to stay on the surface of and object, rather than flowing away quickly.
For Example: Rubbing a balloon on your hair, and then the balloon can stick to the wall.
-
Charged By Friction
objects made from different materials rub against each other, producing a net static charge on each object.
Example: In-class project with the electroscopes, we charged materials by rubbing for say a rod on a piece of fur.
-
Electrostatic Series
- materials listed and based on their ability to hold on to electrons.

-
Insulator
a material in which electrons cannot move easily from one atom to another
example: wood is a insulator
-
Conductor
a material where electrons can move easily from one atom to another.
Example: Metal
-
Semiconductor
A material where electrons can move fairly easy from one atom to another.
For example: silicon is a semi conductor
-
Ground
object that can supply and remove very larger numbers of electrons at once.
For example: dirt, rocks , ground water
-
Electroscope
device for detecting the presence of an electric charger
We used these in class the second day of our electricity unit.
-
Charging By Contact
generating a net charge on a neutral object by touching it with a charged object.
For example: taking a charged rod and touching it to a neutral pith ball.
-
Laws of electric charges
laws that describe how two objects interact electrically when one or both are charged.
For Example: The "Law" Opposites Attract
-
electric field
the space around an charged object, where the effect of its charge can be felt by other objects.
Kinda like when you try and put together two magnets of the same pole together, and you feel the magnetic field. Electric fields are the same.
-
Induced charge separation
movement of electrons in a substance, caused by an electric field of a nearby charged object that is not in direct contact with the substance.
-
Ion
positively or negatively charged atom or group of atoms
Example: a pith ball is positively charged
-
Lightning Rod
metal sphere or point that is attached to the highest part of a building and connected to the ground.
-
Electrostatic Precipitator
type of cleaner that removes unwanted particles and liquid droplets from a flow of gas.
-
Van de Graff generator
a device that accumulates very large charges.
-
Radiation dosemeter
- Small device that detects and measures exposure to radiation.
