Before a drug becomes official, it is given a generic name or common name. A generic name is simpler than the chemical name.

Summarize the Controlled Substance Act of 1970?
This act repealed almost 50 other laws written since 1914 that relate to the control of drugs. The new composite law was designed to improce the administration and regulation of manufacturing, distributing, and dispensing of drugs that have been found necessary to be controlled. The drug enforcement Administration (DEA) was organized to enforce the Act. The basic structure of the Act consists of five claddifications or schedules of controlled substances.
Summerize the steps of new drug development in the United States.
Preclinical research: Begins with discovery, synthesis, and purification of the drugs. The goal at this stage is to use laboratory studies to determine whether the experimental drug has therapeutic value and whether the drug appears to be safe in animals.
Clinical research and development: The "testing in humans" stage is subdivided into three phases. Phase 1 studies determine an experimental drug's pharmacologic properties, such as its pharmacokinets, metabolism, and potential for toxicity at certain dosage. Phase 2 uses a smaller population of patients who have the condition the drug was designed to treat, and phase 3 an even larger patient population is used to ensure statistical significance of the results.
New Drug Application: When sufficient data have been collected to demonstrate that the experimental drug is both safe and effective, and new drug Application is submitted to the FDA formally requesting approval to morket a new drug for human use.
Postmarketing surveillance: After the manufacturer decides to market the drug, this phase consists of an ongoing review of adverse effects of the new drug, as well as periodic inspection of the manufacturing facilities and products.
