Photosynthesis equation.
6CO2.+12H2.0+light energy=yields=C6.H12.06.+6O2.+6H2.O
-
Define: carbon fixation
The dark reaction. Carbon atoms from the atmosphere (CO2.) are used to form organic compounds. Driven by energy from ATP and NADPH from light reaction.
-
Define: photosynthate
Product of photosynthesis. aka glucose
-
Differentiate C3, C4, and CAM.
- C3- 3 carbon compound rings formed, good in cool conditions, stomata open during the day
- C4- 4 carbon compound rings formed, bundle sheaths which allow C3 to occur during the dark cycle, stomata open during day
- CAM- Crassulacean acid metabolism, stomata open during night, 4 carbon compound rings, CO2 stored in vacuoles and is used during the day
-
Define: carbon partitioning
How plants distribute C from photosynthesis and allocates them in different processes and plant parts.
-
3 main macronutrients
Nitrogen. Phosphorous. Potassium.
-
Other macronutrients. (not NPK)
Calcium, Magnesium, Sulfur. High accumulation in plant tissue, but not important.
-
Nitrogen. Why is it important?
- Involved in 50% of plant biomass. It's in amino acids and proteins. A part of chloroplasts.
- Deficiency causes yellowing of leaves (chlorosis)
-
In what form is nitrogen obtained by plants?
Through soil in the form of NO3.- (nitrate) or NH4 (ammonia).
-
Phosphorous. Why is it important? Where does it come from?
- .25% of biomass. Important in lots of compounds like nucleic acids, nucleoproteins, phytin, phospholipids, ATP etc. Effects cell wall permeability.
- Come from parent materials in lower soil level.
- Leaves become blue-purple underneath (due to anthocyanins)
-
Potassium. Why is it important?
- 1-2% of dry weight. Regulates plant functions, and used in enzyme. Needs to be present to form starches and sugars.
- Absorbed as a cation K+ from the soil.
- Deficiency causes dry tips and curled leaf edges.
-
Other micronutrients (7 elements)
Iron, Copper, Zinc, Manganese, Molybdenum, Boron, Chlorine
-
Define: transpiration
The process of water being transported from the soil, to the roots, and exiting the leaves from the stomata.
-
Define: habitat
A set of environmental conditions that includes the interaction of the species in the habitat.
-
Define: ecological niche
The particular ecological role or function that a species fulfills in its habitat
-
3 Types of responses & definitions.
