  1. What does it mean when the verb is “active”?
    The subject of the verb is performing the action. “I hit the ball.” The subject is “I” which is doing the action of hitting the ball.
  2. What does it mean when the verb is “passive”?
    The action of the verb is being done to the subject. “I am hit by the ball”. The subject “I” is being hit by the ball.
  3. What are the components of the Present Passive Indicative verb?
    Present tense stem + Connecting Vowel + Primary Passive personal endings.
  4. What is the Second Person Singular Primary Passive ending and why is it “troublesome”?
    Sai – Because the sigma occurs between vowels in the non-stem part o the word (Lu +e + sai), it will often drop out and the vowels will contract making it difficult to see the true ending.

  6. What is a Deponent Verb?
    A verb that is middle or passive in form but active in meaning. It is always passive in form, but always active in meaning.
  7. How can you tell if a verb is “deponent”?
    Its lexical form – deponent verbs are always listed in lexicons with passive endings. If its lexical form ends in omega – it is not deponent. If the lexical form ends in –omai – then it is deponent.
  8. Can a verb be both regular and deponent in the same tense?
    No- it will be one or the other in a single tense.
  9. Can a verb be deponent in one tense and not in another?
    Yes- it can change from one tense to another.

    • Active, middle, passive. In the present tense – Middle and passive are identical.
    • What are the components of the Present Middle/deponent Indicative verb?
    • Present tense stem + Connecting Vowel + Primary Passive Personal Endings- it is formed the same way that the present passive indicative verb is formed.
