  1. Evolution
    • a process of biological change that occurs in distinct groups of organisms, known as populations
    • results in structural, functional, and behavioral changes that make organisms better able to survive and reproduce
  2. Carrion
animals that had been killed by predators or that ha died from other causes
  3. Homeostasis
    • A state of internal constancy
    • Not a dynamic state--it is ever changing
    • Refers to the balance that occurs at all levels of biological organization
  4. Sensors
    • structures that detect internal and external change
    • elicit a response that offsets change
  5. Ecosystems
a biological system consisting of organisms and their environment
  6. Predators
animals that hunt and kill other organisms
  7. Risk Factors
    • abnormal conditions such as high blood pressure or high blood cholesterol levels that put a person at risk for disease
    • also refers to activities that make one more likely to develop diseases
  8. Kingdom
    • A major grouping
    • Three kingdoms: plant, fungi, and animal
  9. Monerans
    • Simplest, bacterialike organisms
    • first to evolve
    • gave rise to protistans
  10. Protistans
single-celled organisms such as amoebas and paramecia
  11. Metablosim
    • the chemical reactions in the cells and tissues of organs
    • Two types
  12. Metabolism: Type One
    • Anabolic Reaction:
    • a reaction in which food substances are built up into living tissue
  13. Metabolism: Type Two
    • Catabolic Reactions:
    • a reaction in which food is broken down into simpler substances, often releasing energy
  14. Adaptations
    • structural, functional, and behavioral changes in species
    • a result of evolution
  15. Science
defined as knowledge derived from observation, study, and experimention
  16. Hypothesis
A tentative explantion of a phenomenon
  17. Experiment
A proeure designed to test some idea
  18. Theory
Broad generaliztions based on many experimentl observations
  19. Inductive Reasoning
Creating a law based on observations
  20. Deductive Reasoning
coming up with a specific statement or conclusion based on a general rule
  21. Critical Thinking
    • Process that allows people to objectively analyze facts, issues, problems, and information.¬†
    • Permits people to distinguish between beliefs and knowledge
