    • Ovaries in females: promotes ovulation, stimulates production of estrogen and progesterone
    • Testes in males: promotes secretion of testosterone

    failure of sexual maturation
  4. LH hypersecretion
    no known significant effects
  5. Prolactin
    promotes lactation of the breast in conjunction with other hormones
  6. prolactin hyposecretion
    poor lactation in nursing mothers
  7. prolactin hypersecretion
    galactorrhea in nursing mothers
  8. Thyroid-stimulating hormone
    stimulates secretion of thyroid hormone from thyroid gland
  9. TSH hyposecretion
    • infants: cretinism
    • adults: myxedema
  10. TSH hypersecretion
    Graves disease indicated by exophthalmos
  11. Antidiuretic hormone
    increases water reabsorption at the kidneys (returns water to the blood)
  12. ADH hyposecretion
    diabetes insipidus
  13. ADH hypersecretion
    syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone (SIADH)
  14. Oxytocin
    • uterus: stimulates uterine contractions, initiates labor
    • breast: promotes milk secretion from the mammary glands
    • hypo/hypersecretion effects unknown
