    • Includes the brain & spinal cord
    • Center of coordination and control
    • Many drugs stimulate the CNS, but few are used therapeutically
  2. What are the 3 types of CNS stimulants
    • Analeptics
    • Amphetamines
    • Anorexiants
  3. What are Analeptics?
    • Act 2 stimulate CNS
    • Uses= respiratory depression, relieve fatigue
    • Given 2 premibabies 2 help them breath
    • Overdose, alcoholics, drunks

    • Examples:
    • Doxapram= increases cns, post anesthesia, Increased respirations
    • Modafinal= 4 narcolepsy (record sleep pattern), Take in AM
    • NURSE = MONITER AGB LABS AND WATCH RESPIRATIONS
  4. What are Amphetamines?
    • Simulates the CNS; elevates B/P, wakefulness, increase or decreased pulse rate USED SHORT TERM, HIGHLY ABUSIVE (feel good meds)
    • Ex: amphetamine, dextroamphetamine, methamphetamine

    • USES=
    • Obesity (they control appetite)
    • Narcolepsy (record sleep pattern)
    • ADHD (tell parents 2 monitor ht&weight & behavior on kids cuz this rx stunts growth on long term use)
    • Nurse=tell client 2 take rx in the AM
  5. What are anorexiants?
    • Act on the appetite center in the hypothalamus. HIGHLY ABUSIVE
    • Examples= phendimetrazine, phentermine

    Use 4 Obesity

    • NURSE ALERT= Amphetamines and anorexiants have abuse potential and should not be used long term
    • SHOULD NOT TAKE ANTIDEPRESSANTS WHILE TAKING THESE OR 14DAYS BETWEEN ANY ANOREXIANTS OR STIMULANTS OF CNS.
  6. What are A/R of cns stimulants?
    • Headache, dizziness
    • Apprehension
    • Disorientation and hyperactivity
    • Nausea, vomiting
    • Cough, dyspnea
    • Urinary retention
    • Variations in heart rate (ie, tachycardia)
  7. Teaching on Analeptics
    • NURSING ACTIONS/CLIENT TEACHING
    • Preadministration – Weight, BP, Pulse, Respirations. *If ADHD – observe behavior of child.
    • Ongoing – Daily summary of child behavior, Weight and VS (outpatient)
  8. Geri alert on CNS stimulants
    • Older adults more sensitive
    • May show excessive anxiety, nervousness, insomnia, and confusion
    • Cardiovascular problems may worsen
    • Careful monitoring is IMPORTANT
