Cognitive Approach Key Terms and Definitions

  1. Information Processing
    The processing by which information is taken in by the senses, analysed and responded to.
  2. Memory
    The process by which we store and retrieve information. Encoding, Storage and Retrieval.
  3. Forgetting
    Not remembering, which has more than one explanation
  4. Storage
    How information is retained in the brain ready for retrieval.
  5. Retrieval
    Getting/ using information, that has been stored, out  of your memory.
  6. Short Term Memory
    Information must be rehearsed here or else it is lost.
  7. Long Term Memory
    Information is stored as it comes in from the short term memory.
