What year was it introduced?
1979
-
Why was this needed?
In 1949 the population stood at 500m, the birth rate was needed to decrease due to China's scarily fast growing population
-
How do they implement this?
- In factories you must be given permission to try for a child
- Women must receive planning training
- Women must have passed written tests
- Women must be over 24 to marry
- Men must be over 28 to marry
- Neighbours have been told to inform on suspected second children
- Only 1 certificate is given out, if you lose it then tough
-
Exceptions
They're more lenient in more rural areas where strong men are needed, also if your first child is disabled ect
-
Incentives
- Free health care and nursery place
- You will receive a 'One Child Glory' certificate
- Free contraception ect available
-
Penalties?
- Cast fines of £800, ie a year's wages
- Compulsory sterilisation for couples with 2
- Rice rations not avaliable for 2nd child
- Won't recieve free nursery or school place or health care
- Socially ostracised by the local commumity
-
Future problems of the One Child Policy
- Lots of children will have to look after an ageing population
- Babies are abandoned on the street, especially female babies
- Loads more females to males
- Ratio is 116 females :100 males
- 'Little Emperor' Syndrome is also a problem
-
BUT, is it working?
- YES, fertility rate has fallen from 6 in the 1970's to 1.6 today
- Prevented an additional 300m people!
- SO THE POPULATION TODAY IS 1.3B RATHER THAN 1.55B, SUCSESS!?
Definately, although...
