module 15

  1. gland
a group of cells that prepare and release a chemical for use by the body
  2. vaccine
a weakened or inactive version of a pathogen that stimulates the body's production of antibodies which can destroy the pathogen
  3. hormone
a chemical messenger released in the bloodstream that sends signals to specific cells causing them to change their behavior in specific ways
  4. describe the main function of each of the three systems you studied
the lymphatic system removes excess fluid from body tissue and returns to the blood also cleanes the fluid of microorganisms and other contaminants. This process helps fights disease.

the endocrine system produces hormones which help regulate several of the chemical processes that occur in the body.

the urinary system controls and regulates the water in our bodies and maintains the proper balance of chemicals in the water
  5. what two kinds of structures make up the lymphatic system. in which of these structures is the lymph actually cleaned.
lymph vessals and lymph nodes. in the lymph nodes
  6. how does lymph get pumped through the lymphatic system
the lymph vessals are placed in the right place so that the muscles squeeze them spreading lymph
  7. what glands produce tears. what two purposes do tears serve
lacrimal gland. tears protect the eyes from harmful chemicals. tears also make us feel better when we are sad
  8. what three kinds of cells in the lymph nodes fight infection.
    b-cells, t-cells , macrophage
  9. what kind of cell in the lymph nodes produce antibodies
  10. what kind of cell helps the lymph nodes remember the infection
    memory b-cells
  11. does it do any good to take a vaccine once you are sick with the disease the vaccine is supposed to fight
yes *It does a little good.  The purpose of a vaccine is to give you the antibodies and the memory B-cells before the infection takes place.
  12. explain how a kidney functions by starting with the blood going into the kidney and ending with going out the kidney
the renal artery brings blood into the kidney. the blood supplies oxygen and nutruients to the cells of the kidneys and picks up the cells waste products.then the blood goes through the nephron where it is filtered. then is goes through the tubule of nephron then the reabsorbed chemicals and nutrients go back in the blood. also the correct amount of water is returned to the blood. and finally the blood leaves the kidney through the reanal vein.
  13. what does a kidney do with any excess water or chemicals . where do they go.
the excess water and chemicals go from the nephrons into the renal pelvis and then goes into the urteter at this point its called urine
  14. what is the purpose of dialysis
dialysis is used when a persons kidney is not working properly. its is temporary until the person finds a working kidney
  15. produces hormones that regulate the basal metabolic rate
    thyroid gland
  16. produces cortisolm which causes the liver to release glucose into the blood
    adrenal glands
  17. produces insulin which enables glucose to enter the cells
  18. controls the pituitary gland
    hypothalamus gland
  19. produces hormones that control many of the endocrine glands
  20. what gland is called the master endocrine gland
