Isotonic Crystalloid Solution
0.9% Sodium Chloride- Normal Saline Description
Contains the following:
1. 154 mEq/L of Na+
2. 154 mEq/L of Cl-
concentration is near that of blood, the solution is considered isotonic
0.9% Sodium Chloride- Normal Saline Mechanism of Action
replaces water and electrolytes
0.9% Sodium Chloride- Normal Saline Indications
1. All types of non-cardiogenic shock
2. TKO/KVO IV
3. Burn Patients
4. Any volume depleted patient (dehydration, heat emergency, DKA, etc)
5. Hypovolemia in which blood products may be administered
0.9% Sodium Chloride- Normal Saline Contraindications
Use caution in CHF / renal failure patient's
0.9% Sodium Chloride- Normal Saline Precautions
In cases where large amounts of fluid are needed, it might be prudent to use lactated ringers to avoid depletion of other electrolytes

hypovolemia
1. 1L blood lost = 3L normal saline infused
2. attempt to achieve SBP of 100mmHg
3. Use 18g catheter or larger
4. Use in conjunction with PASG in severe hypovolemia hang on blood Y or 10 gtt / ml set
medical patients
1. can use smaller IV catheter (20-22)
2. consider using 60 gtt / ml set
