    • 2. Hyperkalemia
    • 3. promote excretion of barbituates
    • 4. promote excretion of myoglobin after crush injury or electricution
    • 5. Status asthmaticus
    • 6. prolonged CPR
  4. Sodium Bicarbonate Contraindications
    • 1. hypokalemia
    • 2. CHF
  5. Sodium Bicarbonate Precautions
    • 1. corrective dosage essential to avoid elevating PH to high
    • 2. deactivates catecholamines (don't mix with epi in arrest)
    • 3. precipitates with calcium
    • 4. delivers large sodium load
  6. Sodium Bicarbonate Side Effect
    • 1. alkalosis
    • 2. increased vascular volume (hypertonic) resulting in pulmonary edema
    • 3. hypokalemia and dysrhythmias
    • 4. can transiently increase PaCO2
  7. Sodium Bicarbonate Dosage
    1 mEq / kg followed by .5 mEq / kg every 10 minutes as indicated by blood gasses

  9. Sodium Bicarbonate How supplied
    • prefilled syringe: Adult: 50mEq / 50ml
    • Pediatric: 10mEq / 10ml
  10. Sodium Bicarbonate Pediatric Dosage
    1 mEq / kg followed by .5mEq / kg every 10 minutes as indicated by blood gasses
