it is enduring and able to sustain itself throughout life and life stages (determines how outgoing, bubbly and inviting you are or how cold, self-centered and demeaning you are)

how you usually interact with others but can be temporarily altered based on your current "state" of mind (can over-shadow or overwhelm you for a short period of time)

help make predictions of how one trait may coincide with another trait (example: outgoing goes with sociable, good humor, adaptable, and talkative)

- the closer the cultures are to each other, the more similar their personalities
- european and american (outgoing, open and antagonistic)

men are lower on neuroticism across the life-span compared to women who start off high and become less neurotic with age
