Spade: used to dig and cultivate the soil. The sharp flat blade can used to cut through roots while digging.

Shovel: used to move materials such as gravel, soil and sand. It has a rounded end so generally not used for cutting and cultivation.

Trowel: A small hand tool used to plant and lift small plants and to move small amounts of material such as potting mix into containers

Fork: used to cultivate and break up large clods of soil.
