-
The five layers of the epidermis from outside in.
Stratum Corneum, Stratum Lucidum, Stratum Granulosum, Stratum Spinosum, Stratum Basale
-
The three layers that make up the skin.
Epidermis, Dermis, Subcutaneous layer (Hypodermis)
-
Outer layer of skin composed of stratified squamous epithelium and contains no blood vessels.
Epidermis
-
Inner layer of skin, thicker than epidermis, composed of connective tissue smooth muscle tissue, nerve tissue, and blood.
Dermis
-
Hypodermis, made up of tissues that bind the skin to the underlying organs.
Subcutaneous Layer
-
The outermost layer of epidermis. Sheds its dead epithelial cells.
Stratum Corneum
-
Layer of epidermis where cells appear clear and cell parts invisible. Make up thick skin of palms and soles.
Stratum Lucidum
-
Layer of epidermis made of 3 to 5 layers of flattened granular cells containing shrunken keratin and shriveled nuclei.
Statum Granulosum
-
Layer of epidermis made of many layers of cells with large oval nuclei and developing keratin fibers becoming flattened.
Stratum Spinosum
-
Deepest layer of the epidermis with single layer of cells that divide and grow by getting nutrition from neighboring dermis. Stratum Germinativum.
Stratum Basale
-
The thickening and hardening of older cells. Keratin proteins are synthesized and stored in the cell.
Keratinization
-
Skin darkening pigment made from amino acid tyrosine in organelles called melanosomes. Provides skin color and protects the body by absorbing UV radiation.
Melanin
-
Specialized skin cells in the stratum basale layer of the epidermis that produce melanin.
Melanocytes
-
Keeps hair soft, pliable, and waterproof.
Sebaceous Glands
-
Lower body temperature with odorless secretions.
Eccrine Sweat Glands
-
Wet skin during pain, fear, emotional distress, and sexual arousal. Not odorless.
Apocrine Sweat Glands
-
Secrete earwax.
Ceruminous Glands
-
Secrete milk.
