The flashcards below were created by user mmartini on FreezingBlue Flashcards.

  1. Autocrine
molecules on the surface of one cell are recognized by receptors on adjacent cell (auto = self)
  2. Juxtacrine
nerve cells release signal (neurotransmitter) which binds to receptors on nearby cells (juxta = beside, next to, touching)
  3. Paracrine
signal released from a cell has an effect on neighboring cells (para = nearby)
  4. Endocrine
hormones released from a cell affect other cells throughout the body (endo = within)
  5. Ligand
    signaling molecule
  6. Receptor (protein)
molecule to which receptor binds. may be on plasma membrane or within cell
  7. Quorum sensing
    • used by bacteria to determine the population density of the species in a local area
    • each bacterium produces a ligand.
    • Once the concentration of that ligand reaches a critical level, thus indicating a sufficient population density for the response to be effective, all bacteria will respond simultaneously
  8. Plasmodesmata
channels between plant cells that allow ligands to move directly from one cell to another throughout the plant structure
  9. Morphogens
produce in embryos from a central source early in development. They diffuse throughout the tissue creating a concentration gradient that provides a spatial reference for developing cells. Cells far from the morphogen production will develop into one type of tissue while cells close to the source will develop into a different type of tissue. This allows for differentiation of cell structure early in embryotic deveolpment
  10. Pheromoes
released by eggs, provide pathway for sperm to travel, increasing possibility of fertilization
